Planes, trains, and automobiles….my Thanksgiving introspection

Published by Marylyn on

The travel business has certainly picked up. Although I am happy about the boost in business, it has come at the expense of my time to write! Oh well…..New Year’s resolutions are for next month! For now, I am happy to write my Thanksgiving “thankful” introspection.

As a travel planner, what am I thankful for?

I am thankful for the young people who finally were able to have their weddings, and entrusted me to plan their long awaited honeymoons! Cheers to these beautiful human beings.

I am thankful for the friends, colleagues, and clients, who read my “Covid” blogs and enjoyed some armchair travel, as well as gaining some insight into my crazy life.

I am thankful for the couples that said “ENOUGH” to their imposed house arrest, and asked me to plan US roadtrips over this past year. I LOVE a good USA roadtrip.

I am thankful for the “hunters” ……they know who they are! As a non hunter, I have had quite an education on hunting, and have been treated to an insight into this culture and the adventure of coordinating these annual pilgrimages.

I am thankful for the families who exhibited patience and persistence, as we navigated the new normal in planning and executing a summer vacation. From the moving target of Covid testing and regulations, to the “fluid” airline schedules, and the hotels operating with limited staff…..it was a year that required flexibility and sometimes, a sense of humor.

I am thankful for the resilience of my fellow advisors, hotel representatives, and all of the tour guides, restaurants, and drivers that have serviced our industry. Because of our passion for travel, we have survived.

I am thankful for the beautiful places that I have visited within the confines of our country during the past two years. From the beaches, to the mountains, to the cities, each defined by the “flavor” of the topography, and most importantly, the people.

I am thankful for the travel bug that has absorbed me for most of my life, and for the opportunities that I have had to explore this extraordinary world.

There is one journey, however, that I am most thankful for. And that is the life journey over the past 35 years, that I have taken with my husband, and with our four sons. We have traveled together and had some incredible adventures on Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. But it’s not the 5 star hotel, nor the discovery of a breathtaking vista that has defined these travels. It’s not even the summer long RV trip across America. It is all of these woven together into our story. It has been the humans that have shared this journey that have created the narrative. Wherever we are, whether it be the far stretches of the globe, or just sitting around the kitchen island discussing the New England Patriots…..this is the odyssey that I am most thankful for.

Thanks Guys……
